A surfer’s dream and a cyclist’s delight.
Nazaré has become a renowned destination in the world of surfing ever since Garrett McNamara broke the world record for riding the largest wave in 2011, measuring over 23 meters high. While McNamara may not have been aware of the geographical phenomenon responsible for these colossal waves, known as the Nazaré Cannon, the area has gained global recognition for its exceptional surfing conditions.
Praia do Norte, located in Nazaré, is famous for its enormous and perfect waves, created under the influence of the Nazaré Cannon. This geological marvel, one of the largest in the world and the biggest in Europe, remains shrouded in mystery. Spanning approximately 170 kilometers in length and 5 kilometers in depth, the Nazaré Cannon channels the Atlantic Ocean’s energy to produce waves that can reach heights of up to 30 meters, unparalleled anywhere else along the Portuguese coastline.
However, the formation of these monstrous waves depends on several factors besides the cannon itself. These include the wave period (ideally 14 seconds or more), weak wind conditions, and the wave direction (preferably W/NW). While the Nazaré Cannon provides the ideal setting for wave sports enthusiasts, it’s important to note that these conditions can also pose significant risks, especially for less experienced individuals.
This place ranks high on the list of must-sees as part of cycling tours in Portugal.
In 2016, Praia do Norte hosted the first European big wave surfing event, the Nazaré Challenge, attracting some of the world’s top surfers. Additionally, the area hosts the Nazaré Pro championship for bodyboarding. It was on these waves that Garrett McNamara set the Guinness World Record for the longest surfing wave in 2011, at 23.77 meters high. Four years later, Benjamin Sanchis surpassed McNamara’s record by riding a wave measuring 33 meters in height.
Beyond surfing, Nazaré serves as a key stop along the Atlantic Coast cycling tour, offering cyclists breathtaking views of the ocean. With the right routes and guidance, cyclists can experience the stunning scenery while exploring the area. Despite its serene atmosphere, Nazaré provides the perfect environment for both surfers and cyclists to pursue their passions at the highest level.
